American Civil Liberties Union of the Nation’s Capital (ACLU) may be able to assist with your unique legal needs. ACLU is a nonprofit membership organization devoted to protecting liberty and justice for all. In particular we work to protect freedoms of speech and religion, equality, privacy, and fair treatment by government — the rights guaranteed us by the Constitution. We assist many people each month in response to their civil liberties questions and complaints. For example: We provide general information in response to specific questions or complaints. We coach people on how to assert their own rights. We solve problems by negotiation and advocacy on behalf of individuals, without going to court. In a small number of situations, we take cases to court. ACLU staff attorneys and respected volunteer attorneys from private law firms litigate cases which raise civil liberties issues that affect the lives of many people. We write amicus (“friend of the court”) briefs in support of civil liberties in lawsuits filed by others. Where we can’t help, we refer people to other organizations which may be able to. We testify before governmental bodies and other forums and we educate the community through our Web site and the press.
