New York City Financial Justice Hotline may be able to assist with your unique legal needs. The NYC Financial Justice Hotline, a project of New Economy Project, is for community groups and low-income NYC residents, and provides free information, legal advice, and referrals. The hotline advises low-income NYC residents on a range of financial justice issues, including abusive debt collection; unfair bank fees and other unfair bank practices; auto financing scams; prepaid debit cards and payroll cards; credit checks by employers; problems opening or maintaining a bank account; payday loans, check cashers, and pawn shops; problems related to credit reports; and sending money home (remittances). The hotline does NOT provide information on bankruptcy, foreclosure prevention, small claims court cases, or debt consolidation. New Economy Project’s website features know-your-rights information on defending creditor lawsuits, debt collection, credit reports and scores, payday lending, and immigrants’ banking rights (go to http://www.neweconomynyc.org/type/know-your-rights/).
